Since 7 November 2023, Dutch public documents covered by the Apostille Convention and intended for use in mainland China follow the apostille route instead of legalisation by the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands. The embassy\u2019s notice also confirms that its consular authentication service has ceased.<\/p>\n
Start by checking the document type and the instructions from the organisation in China that will receive it. This guide concerns Dutch documents for mainland China. Documents issued elsewhere and requirements for other destinations need their own checks.<\/p>\n
Ask which document or extract is needed, how recent it must be, which language is accepted and whether a translation is required. Obtain any requirements about the translator, certification, paper or digital delivery and the document\u2019s format.<\/p>\n
An apostille authenticates the relevant signature, the capacity of the signatory and, where applicable, the seal or stamp. It does not guarantee acceptance of the document by the receiving organisation. Confirm the content and translation requirements before arranging the work.<\/p>\n
