Start with the authority where you will marry

As a Dutch national planning to marry outside the Netherlands, ask the authority that will conduct the marriage for its current requirements. Explain your nationality, where you live and any previous marriage so it can give you the right document list.

The NetherlandsWorldwide guide to marrying abroad lets you select the destination. Use that guidance alongside the local authority’s instructions before requesting certificates or translations.

Check which certificate is being requested

A declaration about marital status and a certificate of legal capacity to marry serve different purposes. The latter confirms that you and your partner are permitted to marry under Dutch law. Ask the receiving authority for the exact document name and what it must demonstrate.

The Dutch government explains this distinction in its guidance on marrying abroad (Dutch). For the issuing route, use the country guidance on certificates of legal capacity to marry; your residence history matters. Keep the authority’s answer with your application records.

Confirm format, language and document formalities

Ask how recent the documents must be, whether originals or particular extracts are required and which languages are accepted. Check whether an available multilingual version meets the requirement before ordering a translation.

If the authority asks for authentication, confirm the steps for the particular document and destination. Our apostille and legalisation guide explains the distinction. For translator or certification requirements, see sworn and certified translations.

Plan the documents and translation dates together

A birth certificate translation may be relevant if the receiving authority requests a birth record in another language. Confirm which record and language it wants, then allow time for issuing the document, translating it and any required formalities.

Share the recipient’s written instructions with Urgent Vertalen. State the ceremony date and any earlier appointment or submission deadline, and explain whether you need paper delivery, a digital copy or both.

Request a quote for your confirmed document list

Request your no-obligation quote with the documents, required languages, destination, recipient’s requirements and deadline. We will confirm the work we can arrange, price and delivery time before you order.

For help preparing the files and identifying the pages to include, use our document preparation checklist. The document translation overview helps you find the service for each item in your application.
