About Hungarian: what matters in every translation
The largest of the Finno-Ugric languages, Hungarian originated in history when the Hungarians came to Europe from the east. During that period, many words from the Turkish and Iranian languages ended up in Hungarian. When the itinerant Hungarians settled in what is now Hungary, the language was further influenced by Slavic, Germanic, Latin and Italian. Today, English is the largest source of new words, as is the case in many languages. Of the 14.5 million speakers, about 10 million live in Hungary. It is the or an official language in Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia, Austria, Romenia, Ukraine, Koratia and Slovakia. Hungarian uses the Latin script. The oldest known text in this language dates from the twelfth century. In order to represent the missing sounds in the Latin alphabet, other characters are used. As a result, the complete Hungarian alphabet has 44 'letters'. Not entirely in line with expectations, Hungarian is related to Finnish. Both languages have changed in such a way that mutual intelligibility is impossible. A Finn understands just as little about Hungarian as a Dutch person who does not speak Hungarian. If you want to translate a document to or from Hungarian, please check the following elements: Know the Hungarian dialects.
Know the purpose of the translation
What is the purpose of your translation? Do you want to translate certain medical documents or do you need a translation for your stay in Hungary? What is the purpose of the translation? Suppose you want to translate certain documents for a holiday to Hungary, think in advance which documents are mandatory and which obligations they must meet. If it concerns official documents, opt for a sworn translation. If you use the translation for your website or a local advertisement, for example, first assess who will read the translation. Hungarian is based on the northeastern dialect. The differences between the existing dialects are not great, the most deviating dialect is spoken in Romanian Moldova by the Csángo population. Whether you have to take a dialect into account depends on the purpose of your translation.
Are you going to Hungary or do you just need a Hungarian translation?
What do you want to achieve with your translation? Are you traveling to a Hungarian-speaking area or do you want to reach a Hungarian-speaking target group from the Netherlands? In short, what is your goal? As mentioned earlier on this page, the different dialects are not so large that incomprehensible situations arise. However, it is wise to take into account any dialect when translating, this shows that you have left nothing to chance. A native speaker translator knows exactly where the bottlenecks can lie, even when it comes to not only the translation itself, but also the customs that the Hungarians have in their language.
Explore the culture of Hungary
Each country has its own culture, history, customs and habits. We have listed the most important ones for you. Take advantage of it when you communicate with people from Hungary or go to the country yourself, it shows that you are well prepared. There are quite a few differences between Dutch and Hungarian culture. If someone rings the doorbell of a Hungarian, they are not left standing on the street, but are invited inside. One cookie with coffee is not common, a table is immediately filled with all kinds of food. Biscuits, snacks, sandwiches, it is (literally and figuratively) impossible. Where the Dutch can sometimes ask a little bit about how the other is doing, the Hungarians really do mean this. It is considered very rude when you ask a question without interest and don't really care about the answer. If you ask how someone is doing, expect a serious answer that is sometimes very personal by Dutch standards. When greeting, hands are shaken and people look at each other. This applies to both men and women, with a meeting between a man and a woman often accompanied by kissing on the cheek. A bit like it is in the Netherlands.
Within Hungary there is a difference between how men who are acquaintances greet each other. In some areas people give each other an intimate hug, in other areas they are more distant and only shake hands. If you are with several people in a room and there are people whispering to each other, don't think they are talking about you. Whispering in company is seen in Hungary as a form of courtesy. They always look at each other when talking. If you look a lot at something else, you look at it with suspicion. The Dutch are seen as aloof when it comes to keeping physical distance from another person. Italians, for example, are very close in that regard. Hungarians are somewhere in between, so if you feel someone comes a little too close to you: it's the culture. When you give a gift, flowers are a valued object. Avoid giving Chrysanthemums, they belong in the cemetery in Hungarian culture. A wrapped gift will probably not be unwrapped immediately, this is out of courtesy, although it also depends on the region. Hungarians say their surname first and then their first name. Jan Jansen would therefore be called Jansen Jan there. People from outside Hungary know the country mainly as the country where people eat goulash. However, if you order goulash, you will not get the stew you had in mind, but soup. The taste is the same, although the beef stew is known in Hungary as Pörkolt. While Europeans in most countries are not allowed to just distill any drink, in Hungary one can distill 50 liters of Palinka, the national strong drink, per family. Fruits such as pears, cherries, peaches or even honey are used during the firing process. So palinka has many different kinds of flavors.
