About the Croatian language and Croatia

Until the 11th century, Croatian used three alphabets, namely Latin, Cyrillic and Glagolithic. Serbian and Russian still use Cyrillic today. Croatian today uses an extended version of the Latin alphabet. Glagolithic is the oldest alphabet designed for the Slavic languages. This alphabet is no longer used today. Linguist Ljudevit Gaj compiled the final version of the Croatian-Latin alphabet in 1835. He used the Czech alphabet for inspiration. Some call the Croatian alphabet Gaj’s Latin alphabet or Gajica.

Did you already know this about Croatia?

Croatia has the smallest city in the world. Hum, the town with only two streets, 12 houses and 27 inhabitants, is located on the Istria peninsula. Croatia has the world’s first organ to be played by water. The organ can be found in the coastal city of Zadar. The movement of the sea pushes air through the tubes. Different tones are played depending on the strength of the waves. The most famous beach in Croatia is Zlatni Rat. This white pebble beach is shaped like a horn, but it never looks the same. The shape is constantly changed by the current, waves and wind direction. Usually the point protrudes towards the east, but sometimes also towards the west. Some days the beach is a bit longer than others. The Croat Eduard Penkala invented both the fountain pen and the ballpoint pen. In Ludbreg there is a fountain, where once a year not water, but wine comes out. This takes place every year on April 1, on the official holiday of Ludbreg. Most of the Adriatic east coast is owned by Croatia.
