Cyrillic has been the official alphabet in Serbia since 2006, but the Latin alphabet is still gaining popularity. Serbian is written entirely phonetically. This means that words are written as they are pronounced. Even foreign names are written as pronounced, for example John Major, this is written as Džon Mejdžor. The Cyrillic alphabet is based on the Greek script, but has been expanded with additional characters. Serbian has gone through its own development and therefore differs from Russian Cyrillic in a number of ways. The final version of the Serbian alphabet was compiled in 1818 by linguist Vuk Karadžić. Serbian uses loanwords from modern European vocabulary. Examples of these words are: avion (airplane), fabrika (factory) and fudbal (football). In addition, Serbian uses a large number of Turkish loanwords, such as pamuk (cotton), majmun (monkey) and jogurt (yogurt).
