About the Vietnamese language
How did the Vietnamese language originate and further develop? In the second century BC the Chinese dominated the country’s politics. This gave the Vietnamese language a lot of Chinese influences. In the 10th century, Vietnam became independent and classical Chinese was adopted for use by the government, in science and literature. In the late 1800s, France invaded the country, causing many French terms to be used in Vietnamese. Also, the French gradually replaced Chinese with French and it became the official language in education and government.
The pronunciation of the Vietnamese language
Like Thai, among others, Vietnamese is also a tonal language. This means that the meaning of a word depends on the tone of pronunciation. The language has a total of 6 different pitches, including neutral, fast/slow falling and rising. Each word can therefore be pronounced in 6 ways and therefore have 6 different meanings.
