Start with the documents your application requires

Moving to the Netherlands often means preparing official documents from another country. Start with the document list for your application and the instructions from the organisation requesting them. A residence application and registration with a municipality are separate procedures, so check each set of instructions.

Depending on your situation, you may be asked for documents such as a birth certificate or marriage certificate. Do not order a translation of every document you own: first establish which documents, languages and formats are required.

When does the IND require a translation?

For an IND application, a document in a language other than Dutch, English, French or German must be translated into one of those languages. If the translation is made in the Netherlands, the translator must have been sworn in by a Dutch court.

Urgent Vertalen can arrange a translation for the IND. Send the document and the instructions you received so our advisers can quote for the appropriate service. For the terminology, read our explanation of sworn and certified translations.

Check the document and its translation separately

Translation makes the text understandable in the required language. Legalisation concerns the origin of the document and its signature, seal or stamp. One does not automatically replace the other.

For foreign documents used in the Netherlands, check the official guidance for the country that issued the document. If you have the translation made abroad, the IND says that the document and translation usually need legalisation. Follow the country-specific instructions before ordering stamps or translations.

Keep names, supporting pages and deadlines together

Agree which documents and pages are needed for your request, then send legible copies that include any relevant stamps, endorsements and attachments. Tell us how names appear in the other documents in your application and include any instructions about spelling or transliteration.

Share your deadline at the start. Our urgent translation service can check the available options; we confirm the delivery time before you order. Allow separately for obtaining documents, legalisation and delivery of paper originals.

Arrange your translation with Urgent Vertalen

Our advisers help you organise the translation work for your application, from passport translations to other official document translations. You have one team to contact about the agreed scope, price and delivery.

Request your no-obligation quote with the document, source and target languages, recipient’s instructions and deadline. We will confirm what the translation service includes before work starts.

Official guidance

Check the IND’s translation and legalisation requirements and NetherlandsWorldwide’s country guidance for foreign documents. The Bureau Wbtv register overview provides information about registered sworn interpreters and translators.
