Translating an application letter

You are looking for a job or an internship abroad. After finding one or more vacancies which seem like a good match you start writing an application letter and drawing up your CV. You spend your time and energy writing an application letter in your own language. Unfortunately the person who is to read this in the other country will not understand the text. Because you are not sufficiently competent in the other language, or simply don’t have the time, translating the letter yourself is not an option. Our experienced translators understand how important it is for your application letter to be translated into the relevant language using your own wording. Welcome to Urgent Vertalen.

Translating an application letter

An application letter is used to summarise your motivation, personality and suitability for the function, in reaction to an announcement of a vacancy. We translate application letters on a daily basis, some of which are still written the “old-fashioned way”, with pen and paper, to the full satisfaction of our clients. It is extremely important that your application letter should come over in a positive manner, because a business or organisation often has to choose from hundreds of application letters. This begins with an accurate translation of your original text

The form of an application letter, in the language you desire

The form of an application letter is very important if you wish to create a professional impression. However this can vary greatly between countries and languages. In the Netherlands you learn that you should start an application letter with your own name and address, then the full address of the company or institution, the place and the date, then the heading “subject”. Even the contents of the letter in terms of its structure, may be subject to different “requirements” for each country. So we advise you to write your application letter in the form of the relevant language that you wish for your translation. Naturally, if you wish and if necessary, the translator can give you a few tips. Once the translation is ready you will receive your application letter as a Word document via email, so that you are free to make any substitutions/amendments you may wish. Besides translating your application letter it is also advisable to have your CV translated by the same translator. This way you retain the same style and you know for sure that the translations are consistent.
