About Korean
Korean is a unique language. There are grammatical similarities with Japanese and in terms of vocabulary, there is a distant similarity with several Chinese languages. Hangul is used to write Korean, which is a phonetic script. The script consists of 14 consonants and 10 vowels, which are grouped into syllables by a kind of square. It came into being around 1444, under the leadership of the Korean king Sejong the Great. In 1446, Hangul was first published in the Hunmin Jeongeum. The way numbers are handled in Korean is rather typical. Two number systems are used, Korean numbers and Sino-Korean numbers. People use Korean numbers to indicate numbers of objects, as well as for hours and ages. Sino-Korean numbering is used to tell minutes, dates and amounts. So if you want to indicate time, you have to use both systems.
In South Korea, Hangul Day has been celebrated every 9th of October, since 2006. It has been a national holiday in South Korea since that year. Hangul day is the day of the Korean alphabet. In North Korea, they count back to the birth day of their ‘eternal leader’, Kim Il-Sung. This means in the year 2018, it is the year 107 in North Korea. Public transportation in South Korea is great, the average subway delay per year is only a few seconds. Wearing jeans is illegal in North Korea. North Koreans are allowed to choose from 28 different hairstyles at the hairdresser. In South Korea, if someone writes a name in red, it means the person is deceased or dying. South Korea has the fastest Internet in the world.
