Sworn translation of a patent
Say, you’ve invented something unique. A machine, text, logo, a model or even a plant variety. It is advisable to then protect your idea as your intellectual property (IP) in multiple European countries at once. A number of European countries, the Netherlands included, require an official translation before the patent can be validated in that country. You can find more information concerning this process on this page.

Applying for a patent in the Netherlands
You can protect your invention with a patent. If you hold the patent to your unique product, image or text, you can prohibit others from reproducing, selling or using your invention. By applying for a patent in the Netherlands, you obtain the exclusive right to industrially produce or sell an invention. With this, the patent is valid in the Netherlands, Curacao and Sint-Maarten. NOTE: Aruba has its own patent law. It does not offer protection against reproduction abroad. You can apply for a patent for the Netherlands via the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (the Netherlands Enterprise Agency). Your application will lead to a registration patent that is solely valid in the Netherlands. Is it therefore important to ensure that your full application is written in Dutch.

Your translation in 3 easy steps

Send us the text that needs to be translated per email, in Word or PDF format, or send us a scan or picture.

Your translation will be quickly made for you by a professional (sworn) translator.

You will receive your translation by email and, in case you requested a sworn translation, also by direct mail or courier.

Are you looking for a broader protection for your invention?
If you want a patent for multiple European countries at once (approximately 25 at present), you may submit an application to the European Patent Office. You may also consult the website of the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (the Netherlands Enterprise Agency) for the application for a patent for Europe. After assessment, you receive a bundle of national patents.
These national patents must, after receipt, be validated in the desired country. The patent application may be provided in English, German or French. By virtue of this, you will be exempt from having to provide a translation for countries where these languages are spoken on a national level, inter alia the United Kingdom, Germany and France. You need a sworn translation for all other languages. Without a sworn translation of your patent, your patent application will not be approved.
