Because of this far-reaching interest, several Dutch words (especially terms from the shipping industry) ended up in the Russian language. boatswain – “боцман” (botsman, from the Dutch ‘bootsman’), captain – “капитан” (kapitan, from the Dutch ‘kapitein’), sideburns – бакенбарды (bakenbardy, from the Dutch ‘bakkebaard’), cable rope – “кабельтов” (kabeltov, from the Dutch ‘kabeltouw’), hatch – “люк” (lyuk, from the Dutch ‘luik’).
